What Is a Birth Plan?
A birth plan — or birth preferences sheet — is a simple way to communicate what matters most to you during labor and birth. It's not a contract, and it can't control how your labor unfolds. What it does is help you think through your options, share your wishes with your birth team, and start important conversations with your provider.
GOOD TO KNOW
The best birth plans are flexible. Birth is unpredictable, and the goal is always a healthy parent and baby. Your preferences are a starting point, not a script.
Why It's Useful
- Helps you learn about your options before labor begins
- Gives your provider and birth team a quick reference
- Reduces stress in the moment — you've already thought things through
- Helps your support person advocate for you
How to Use This Worksheet
Use the interactive builder below to select your preferences for each section. You can add notes for anything specific. When you're done, download a clean one-page PDF to share with your provider, bring to the hospital, or save to your phone.
Tips for a Useful Birth Plan
- Keep it simple: One page is ideal. Highlight your top priorities.
- Discuss it with your provider: Share it at a prenatal visit around 36 weeks. Ask for their input.
- Be flexible: Use phrases like "I prefer" and "I would like to try" rather than "I will not."
- Include your support person: Make sure they know your wishes and feel comfortable speaking up for you.
What to Think About
- Who do you want in the room?
- What kind of environment helps you feel calm?
- What are your thoughts on pain management?
- Are there positions you'd like to try?
- What are your wishes for immediately after birth (skin-to-skin, feeding, cord clamping)?
